Waste not, want not.
Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has filed a bill requiring restaurants to serve half-portions of rice. This is to make sure the precious grain doesn’t go to waste, reports GMA News. But will the restaurants also be charging half the price?
Violators may be fined PHP20,000 for the first offense, Php50,000 for the second offense and PHP100,000 or the third offense.
Estimates from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute show that each Filipino leaves three teaspoons of rice to waste every day, which amounts to around PHP23-million daily, or over PHP8-billion a year. The Philippines has an estimated population of 96 million as of 2010.
