Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Jose Angel Honrado said they are still looking for a solution to the traffic congestion inside and outside the four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
During a press conference with airport reporters, Honrado discussed the factors surrounding air traffic congestion and road traffic congestion, but said he could not think of any formula to resolve the problems.
“How I wish. Eh may construction. Kahit na may enforcer o mag-wang-wang ka, walang mangyayari,” he said.
Asked by ABS-CBN as to until when air travelers will suffer from the worsening air traffic congestion, Honrado said he does not know.
He said the cause of air traffic congestion is the inefficiency of airlines in managing their flight operations.
He said an average of 150 to 200 flights are delayed daily, and most of these are not due to airport terminal issues.
“I do not know, kasi nang dumating ako nagdurusa na ang publiko. Ginawa na namin ang ano, siguro ang tanungin natin ang airline,” he said.
“Kasi ang major factor of the delay is the airlines’ failure to comply with the on time departure and arrival, kaya hindi namin ma-classify, hindi namin madagdagan ang runway capacity,” he added.
The MIAA chief said anyone can give suggestions on how to resolve the problems of air and road traffic congestion inside and outside the airport terminals.
Travel time from NAIA Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 normally takes about 20 minutes, but because of the NAIA Expressway construction, travel time is now about 1 hour and 30 minutes or 2 hours.
With the air traffic congestion, departing commercial aircraft usually wait for about 30 minutes to over an hour along the taxiway.
Airlines are losing billions of dollars because of the flight delays.
