Birthday Bash Be Damned: Sinas ‘deserves promotion’ despite ‘mañanita,’ says police chief

Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas deserves to be promoted despite that viral birthday bash, his boss Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Camilo Cascolan said today, despite allegations that the event flouted quarantine rules.

Too soon?

Cascolan told news talk show ANC Headstart that he plans to promote five officers to become three-star generals, and Sinas will be one of them because “he has done good things.”

In May this year, Sinas hosted a birthday party with at least a dozen of his men. Photos of the event were widely shared online by critics, who pointed out that the celebration was a violation of the country’s ban on mass gatherings. Sinas denied that a party happened despite the photos, and insisted it was merely a mañanita, a tradition in the police force where a birthday celebrator is serenaded by his colleagues.

To sum it up: same, same.

“We have to evaluate him properly. The guy also deserves an evaluation and of course a promotion, too…I think he needs to be up at the directorial staff or in a certain position that is fit most especially for him,” Cascolan said about Sinas.

“I believe he is an expert with regards to [the] training of personnel, and training of recruit… I am a father and a brother to all of them, let’s just say if they will be disciplined I will do that for them,” Cascolan added.

Prior to this, former PNP Chief Archie Gamboa had also defended the controversial Sinas, saying he doesn’t believe there was a violation because the partygoers allegedly observed social distancing during the bash.
