You know what hurts more than a root canal without anesthesia? If found guilty, he’ll have to pay a total deficiency tax liability amounting to PHP36.49 million.
“On Thursday, September 25, the Bureau of Internal Revenue filed a criminal case against Dr. Steve Mark Gan before the Department of Justice for attempting to evade the payment of income taxes and value-added taxes for the 2009, 2010, and 2011,” reports Ina Reformina on ABS-CBNnews.com.
Gan, the founder of Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC), has been dubbed “Dentist to the Stars” by the local press. According to the GAOC website, celebrities such as Piolo Pascual, Derek Ramsay, John Lloyd Cruz, and Sarah Geronimo are among its clients.
The BIR said the case against Gan came from confidential information accusing the dentist of tax evasion.
The BIR compared Gan’s declared service income as against the income he received from Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) via credit card payments made by clients. The BIR said they found that Gan “substantially underdeclared” his correct taxable income by 283.13 percent or PHP8.84 million in 2009, 664.46 percent or PHP20.18 million in 2010, and 51.43 percent or PHP4.18 million in 2011.
The report noted: “Under Sec. 248 (B) of the Tax Code, under-declaration of taxable income by more than 30% constitutes a prima facie case of fraud.”
