Bicol Express operations still suspended

This won’t sit well with those who’ve been planning to go to Bicol via train for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. (Then again, maybe they already know this and have already made other plans.)

“Philippine National Railways (PNR) general manager Engr. Joseph Allan Dilay cited safety concerns for the continued suspension of the Bicol Express’ inter-provincial trips,” reports Kris Bayos in the Manila Bulletin.

The Bicol Express, whose start-off point is the Tutuban station in Manila, was suspended last year following its derailment in Quezon province. Apparently, flash floods had eroded the train track’s embankment. There were no fatalities but the train and the Sariaya town bridge were damaged.

According to Dilay, the Bicol Express is still undergoing “a third-party safety evaluation.”
