Marie Abesamis — a resident of Pasig City — was robbed by a woman that she had hired as a helper. The woman, identified as Maribel Magaso, worked at Abesamis’ house for three days before she ran off with two pricey gadgets: a cellphone and a tablet.

Abesamis said she had employed Magaso in good faith, as the latter was able to present the necessary documents such as a clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI.)

However, Abesamis recalled that Magaso was most likely already looking for gadgets that she could steal the very first day that she was working in the house. “Kasi lilinisin n’ya lahat, kahit ‘yung hindi mo naman pinapalinis (She cleaned everything, even the things I didn’t tell her to clean).”

It was too late when Abesamis realized that Magaso’s “initiative” was actually part of her nefarious plan. Magaso also locked Abesamis inside the house when she stole the gadgets. She also took the house keys.

After a few weeks, Magaso contacted Abesamis and told her she had to pay PHP10,000 if she wanted her phone and tablet back. Abesamis contacted the police, who set up an etrapment operation at a mall in Cubao.

Magaso is now behind bars. She admitted to the crime saying, “Yun lang naman po eh, cellphone lang tsaka tablet [ang kinuha ko] (All I took was a cellphone and tablet).”

Police also recovered a list of more gadgets from Magaso. They are trying to find out if she is part of a group doing what they have dubbed as the “Yaya Gadget” Modus. (from a TV Patrol report)
