Almost 2,000 Benguet locals and tourists on Thursday gathered in La Trinidad trading post as they partook of a 1.3-ton vegetable salad. The creation of the giant vegetable salad was spearheaded by the League of Associations in the La Trinidad Trading Center in coordination with a private culinary school in Benguet.
The salad was made of vegetables freshly harvested from Benguet farms such as carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumber, cauliflower, and sugar bits. Three types of dressing were also prepared to add flavor to the giant salad.
Agusta Balanoy, head of Benguet Farmers’ Marketing Cooperative, said the activity aims to promote the local products of La Trinidad and, at the same time, boost the tourism industry in the municipality.
“We want to tell the consumers that we’ve got a lot of vegetables here. There are organic and Good Agricultural Practices-certified vegetables. So, it would be better if we would patronize our own products instead of imported ones” Balanoy said.
“We want to promote tourism in La Trinidad because La Trinidad is known for strawberries, but we also have flowers, and we want to tell everyone about our produce,” Balanoy added.
Preparations for the activity took almost a month.
Jonathan Micua, manager of School of Knowledge and Development Culinary School, said almost 100 students participated in the preparation of the ingredients.
“It’s a bit difficult and a challenge for us. We divided the work [SKD and League of Associations]. We prepared the food and they did the purchasing,” he said.
The creation of the giant veggie salad was a part of the first Foundation Day of the La Trinidad Trading Center.
