Beauty doctor Joel Mendez faces 1 to 3 years in prison for tax evasion

This ain’t pretty.

“In a ruling issued yesterday, the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) First Division found beauty doctor Joel Mendez guilty of violating Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code and sentenced him to a maximum of three years in prison for tax evasion,” reports Janvic Mateo in The Philippine Star.

The CTA also ordered Mendez to pay a fine of PHP10,000.

The report noted: “The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed a complaint for tax evasion against Mendez for failure to file or supply correct information in his income tax return in 2005. The amount involved then was PHP1-million.”

The report further added that “this is the second time the CTA convicted Mendez of tax evasion,” as the CTA’s Second Division sentenced Mendez to a prison term of up to two years in 2011. Mendez had filed a motion for reconsideration before the CTA full court, which denied it in 2012. Mendez then elevated the case to the Supreme Court, where it remains pending.

In his previous appeal, Mendez had claimed that he “was not aware of the BIR notices as he was not informed by his accountant.”
