Ayala, SM bid for MRT-LRT ticket contract

Who would have thought creating a universal pass for our sucky sucky train system would cost so much money?

Ayala Group and Henry Sy’s SM have submitted bids “for PHP1.7 billion contract that will create a single ticket for the MRT-3 and LRT lines, similar to Hong Kong’s Octopus Card and London’s Oyster Card,” reports ANC.

The contract will be awarded by February 2014, according to the Department of Transport and Communications.

Seriously though, can we spend that money on something else? Like airconditioning, more carriages and faster intervals between train services?

While we’re at it, can MRT cards not have a limited three-month validity period?
