Avoid sex with homosexuals to prevent AIDS, claims flyer distributed in Iloilo

A flyer, bearing logos of two government agencies in the Philippines, and allegedly being circulated in Iloilo City, advises readers that to prevent HIV, one should “avoid having sexual intercourse” with homosexuals.

A photo of the flyer was first posted on Twitter by user @jeoffnotgeoff on Fri, Aug 5.

Metro Manila Pride Facebook page quickly shared the photo with its 29,002 followers, and denounced the literature.

“This horrible flyer does nothing but spread misinformation, discrimination, and stigma about gay folk, HIV, and AIDS. Let us put an end to irresponsible and dangerous initiatives like these,” it said.

DepEd and PopCom have both denied knowledge of the poster.

On Sat, PopCom Region VI published a statement on its Facebook page, claiming that that they are firm advocates of LGBT rights “working hard to end the stigma against LGBT and HIV.”

“POPCOM VI has never and will never produce such material with wrong and misleading information,” it said.

DepEd Regional Office VI made a similar statement on the same day, and said that they too have high regard and full respect for the rights to the LGBT community.

Apologies are good, but what we really need to know is the person behind this malicious poster.
