It looks like the expat trusted the wrong person.
“Harry John Felipe McKenzie, a 63-year-old Australian national, was robbed and killed inside his spa in Ermita, Manila on Friday, May 9,” reports Aie Balagtas See in The Philippine Star.
McKenzie’s body was found on a couch in the Yin Yang spa’s living room by a vendor at about 9:45am. The report said “his head was bloody, his feet were tied, and his mouth was gagged.” He also had bruises all over his body.
Police later revealed that several pieces of jewelry, a cell phone and an undetermined amount of money were missing from the spa.
Police have identified a man named Aaron Balagtas as a prime suspect in McKenzie’s murder.
The report noted: “McKenzie hired Balagtas—who has been arrested for robbery in Manila and neighboring cities—to renovate Yin Yang, particularly its sauna room.”
Police said McKenzie may not have been aware of Balagtas’ criminal record.
Balagtas remains at large.
