Australian boxer Braydon Smith has died after losing a 10-round showdown against Filipino fighter John Vincent Moralde, Boxing Scene reported.
Moralde on Saturday won a wide unanimous decision, 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93, to hand Smith his first loss.
Boxing Scene reported that Smith was “alert and talkative” after the bout, but later collapsed and was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane where he was put into an induced coma.
He died at the hospital Monday afternoon, according to Boxing Scene.
James O’Shea, the family’s representative, said Smith had wanted to “change the image of boxing.”
“A lot of times in this country, the sport gets a bad rap. A big goal of his life was to show it’s not (a bad sport),” O’Shea said, as quoted by Boxing Scene.
