Ateneo’s Philosophy and English departments are Centers of Excellence

The Commission on Higher Education has declared the Departments of Philosophy and English (Literature) of the Ateneo de Manila University as Centers of Excellence, distinctions that both departments have earned before.

According to a release on the university’s website, Ateneo’s Philosophy department was previously declared a Center for Excellence in 2003. The Department of English was declared a Center for Excellence in 1999.

Centers for Excellence are higher education institutions that “have demonstrated the highest degree or level of standard along the areas of instruction, research and extension.”

“They provide institutional leadership in all aspects of development in specific areas of discipline in the various regions by providing networking arrangements to help ensure the accelerated development of HEIs in their respective service areas,” CHED said.

Ateneo’s Philosophy and English departments–as well as the Department of Filipino, which was declared a Center for Development–will have access to government funding for scholarships, faculty development, and to upgrade libraries and laboratories.
