At least 2 injured after passenger accidentally smashes Manila LRT train’s window

At least two people were injured this afternoon when a man accidentally shattered a window on one of Manila’s LRT-1 trains.

LRT-1’s spokesperson Sweeden Ramirez told radio station DZBB that the incident occurred at about 1:50 pm near the United Nations station in Manila when an unidentified passenger tried to open the door while the train was in transit. A sudden gust of wind entered the coach when the door was opened, and Ramirez told The Philippine Daily Inquirer that the glass window broke into pieces due to air pressure (which is why opening the doors when the train is moving is strictly forbidden).

The man who forcefully opened the door was arrested by the police, reported the Manila Bulletin. The two injured passengers were treated by the staff of the Philippine Red Cross. It’s unclear why the man tried to open the door but cops are investigating the case.

With a route of almost 20 kilometers, the LRT-1 was first opened in 1984. Around 500,000 passengers ride the trains daily, which travels across 20 stations such as Roosevelt in Quezon City, Balintawak in Caloocan City, and Carriedo in Manila.
