Solon with marriage proposal gets firm ‘no’ from netizens

We’ve seen a lot of proposals made in public, but never one made in in the august halls of Congress. A neophyte party-list representative waded through the floor of debating congressmen, who were deliberating the 2014 national budget, dropped on his knee and proposed to his fiancée. In the thick of the discussion, Magdalo party-list representative Ashley Acedillo took the floor Friday night.

“Mr Speaker, I’ve been in Congress for a few months but I already feel that I am not able to discharge my duties and functions properly,” he said from podium. “Siguro po natatanong niyo po kung bakit. Ngayon po kasi sa buhay kapag wala po kayong katuwang.

“That’s why I am compelled to conduct this inquiry and I am fortunate that the subject of my inquiry is present here today. I humbly propose to ask one question. But before  I do so, I have one problem…the subject of my inquiry is not yet on the floor.”

He then asked his colleagues “to please escort Ms Maria Paz Ignacio Ocampo from Pasig City and Cavite City to please take the floor so that I may [ask] my question.”

She said yes.

The gesture may be romantic for the couple, but for netizens who do not know them, it was “out of place.” Some Philippine Daily Inquirer readers expressed dismay over the distasteful proposal, which was done while Congress was in session. Users said congressmen should not lose focus on their jobs and finish important legislation, instead of being distracted by sideshows such as this.

“The marriage proposal of Acedillo…is not a matter of the State,” writes user kokak. “F*CKING EPAL MAGDALO REP. MAKING THE HOUSE A F*CKING MOCKERY OF CORRUPT PROPORTION,” opines koolkid_inthehouse. MM
