It’s so easy to hate Yeng Constantino. She sings what she wants and she gets paid for doing so. She wears what she wants and others look up to her for this. She’s just being herself and people love her. Incidentally, these are the same reasons why she’s so lovable. This fun and fearless female is doing her own thing.
Consider “B.A.B.A.Y.,” her latest single from her new album called “Metamorphosis.” It’s fun and catchy in a nursery rhyme-y kind of way; definitely unlike any of the songs she’s released, from anthem-y ballads to headbang-inducing pop-rock tunes.
The video is equally fun. Starting off with Yeng washing clothes in a batya while singing a little intro, she before long breaks out into the actual song. To match her newly-dyed hair (color choice is red), she wears a red dress and accessorizes using a couple of cuffs plus… cat ears.

The video looks pretty low-budget (intentionally, of course) and makes use of cardboard cut-outs for the set and some of the costumes. It’s not that bad. It’s actually charming, like it won first prize in a video-making contest at school. It’s very “Batibot” – minus Kiko Matsing, Pong Pagong, Ate Sienna, and Kuya Bodjie, of course.
It’s pretty entertaining. It’s a visual feast with all the colorful costumes and the dancing. There are balloons, a giant cellphone, a giant telephone, ninjas, and umbrellas.
My only issue is that the video undoubtedly looks inspired by Bjork’s video for “It’s Oh So Quiet,” from the umbrellas to the dancing, to the one-take style.
That and how the song has been playing in my head again and again and again ever since I first listened to it.
