Philamlife Theatre saved by SM

Residential property developer SM Development Corp. (SMDC) said it would “save and preserve” the “culturally historic” Philamlife Theater in Manila.

The announcement may have been a reaction to public pressure and clamor from artists to save the premiere artistic venue.

According Inquirer News, SMDC led by tycoon Henry Sy, agreed to preserve “the complete theater, including all its elements and most especially its acoustics” in close consultation with the country’s music, acoustics and design experts.

SMDC vice chair and chief executive officer Henry Sy Jr. met with Olivier Ochanine, the music director and chief conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra to discuss the matter.

Ochanine had earlier launched the online petition to save the Philamlife Theatre.
