Arroyo says political persecution must stop

Looking fresh and relaxed after her release from hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VCMC), Pampanga representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said that political persecution must be stopped.

The former President had been detained at VMMC since 2011, and was released on Jul 21.

“To begin with, the detention itself was unjust. So to me, that’s the most important thing. And what I learned from that, this whole thing of political power, to persecute political enemies, that must stop,” said the former President in an ABS-CBN interview at her home in La Vista Subdivision in Quezon City.

She clarified that she didn’t mean political figures should be exempted from prosecution, but the process should be fair.

“I must be the last victim. Let me be the last victim,” she said.

It may be recalled that Arroyo was accused of conspiring with other PCSO officials in misusing PHP366 million of the PCSO intelligence funds from 2008 to 2010. The Arroyo camp said the the she spent more than 1,600 days in house arrest.

“I don’t wish what happened to me on my worst enemies,” she said.
