A resident is urging the local government of Quezon City to stop establishments from encroaching on Howmart Road in Baesa, Quezon City.
Speaking to radio dzMM, the resident said the encroachment of public spaces has sped up in the past two years.
“May nagbebenta ng isda, may nagbebenta ng bigas. May nagtatayo ng karinderya. Ang problem ang ino-occupy nila part of the street (There’s someone selling fish, another selling rice. Someone’s setting up a carinderia. The problem is they’re occupying part of the street),” the resident, who remained anonymous, told radio dzMM.
Howmart Road is only two lanes wide, with no sidewalk. The resident said some of the establishments are already pouring concrete partitions on the street to widen their places of business.
He also lamented that some residents have made the front of their houses as parking spaces.
City Administrator Aldrin Cuna said there is a local ordinance that bars the extension of residences and establishments on public spaces including sidewalks and streets.
He urged the resident to file a complaint with his office.
“We will call the attention of barangay officials and tell them to call the attention of the resident or self-demolish. If not, we will have to enforce the ordinance and wala tayong choice kundi kailangang tastasin ang mga nasa easement natin,” he said.
He also said car owners who park their vehicles in public spaces may be charged with obstruction and their vehicles towed.
