Another Filipina tests positive for COVID-19 in Hong Kong

Another Filipina in Hong Kong has tested positive for the potentially deadly COVID-19, the Philippine Consulate announced today, making her the second Filipino in the special administrative region to be infected with the virus.

In an official statement that appeared on its Facebook page, the consulate said the patient, aged 29, “was in good spirits” when she spoke to their staff on the phone. She also told them that she no longer has a fever.

“She added that she is well taken care of but hospital visits are not allowed given that she is in isolation,” the consulate said. “She requested for some personal items which the Consulate will immediately bring to her today. She also asked that we keep her identity secret.”

According to GMA News, the Filipina is Hong Kong’s 90th case and her employer is the city’s 85th. Her employer’s husband and son, as well as another domestic worker, are asymptomatic and have been quarantined.

The consulate added that as of today only one Filipina remains in quarantine, who is “healthy and asymptomatic.” She will be released tomorrow from the hospital.

Meanwhile, the first Filipina to have been infected by the virus will be released sometime this week if test results show that she is negative. The 32-year-old was treated at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan. Her employer was the city’s 52nd coronavirus patient.

Early this month, the Philippines imposed a travel ban on China, where the virus originated, as well as on its special administrative regions of Macau and Hong Kong, after a Chinese national died of COVID-19 in the country. After initially prohibiting Filipinos from traveling to the areas, the government relented, making an exception for overseas Filipino workers in the affected areas.

Only three people have been infected with COVID-19 in the Philippines, all of whom were Chinese nationals. Though one succumbed to the illness, the other two recovered and have since gone back to China.
