Angat Dam now at critical level

Let’s hope it doesn’t get worse.

“Data from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) showed Angat Dam water level has dropped to 179.80 meters as of 6am on Monday, May 12, lower than its 180-meter critical level,” reports Ron B. Lopez in Manila Bulletin.

This has prompted Angat Dam’s management to stop its irrigation supply to farmers in Bulacan and Pampanga.

Rodolfo German, general manager of the Angat River Hydroelectric Power Plant, explained that “the farmers could still yield their crops as the local government has laid several measures, including the use of pump system in anticipation of the dry spell.” He added that “the irrigation in the areas will resume once the dam water level regains its normal state.”

The report noted: “Angat Dam supplies 97% of Metro Manila’s water and will continue its normal supply but will decrease once the dam reaches a low 160-meter water level.”

The weather bureau said only heavy rains, preferably a thunderstorm, could bring back the water level in the dam. Meanwhile, cloud seeding operations will be undertaken.
