Angat Dam back to ‘normal operating level’

We hate the heavy rains for flooding, but they’ve done at least one good thing.

“Angat Dam reached its 180-meter normal operating level on Saturday, August 30, more than three months after it dropped below the ideal level for domestic water supply, irrigation, and power generation,” reports Ellalyn De Vera in Manila Bulletin.

The report further revealed that as of 6am on Saturday, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) data showed Angat Dam’s elevation at 180.30 meters, which is 2.13 meters higher than the recorded level last Friday, August 29.”

Then again, the report pointed out that “the dam is still almost 30 meters below its normal high water level of 210 meters.”

And we may have somebody to blame for that.

The report noted that “water concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water criticized the government’s decision to release water for irrigation in Central Luzon even before the dam reached its 180-meter normal operating level.”

Other major dams supplying the drinking water and irrigation requirements of Luzon, including Ipo, La Mesa, Pantabanagn, and Magat have also registered increased water levels.
