Dr. Ambeth Ocampo is known for making history come alive with his stories and mind-blowing trivia.
For all his work, the 54-year-old history buff bagged the Japan’s Fukuoka Academic Prize 2016.
It was given in recognition of his contribution to the academic, cultural and social progress of the Philippines.
According to the award citation, Ambeth provides “his readers with a clear insight into the actual thoughts and actions of the heroes and notables of history.” He was able to “present history as a compelling narrative”.
Ambeth is a professor, historian, columnist, author, and cultural administrator.
He has written over twenty books including bestsellers Looking Back (1990) and Rizal Without the Overcoat (1990). He also has a newspaper column and he ocassionally gives public lectures.
“The work of a historian is long and lonely, ” Ambeth said in a video “and receiving [this award] is validation of my work and an inspiration to do better.”
The Fukuoka Academic award is given “to honor outstanding achievements by individuals or groups/organizations in preserving and creating the unique and diverse cultures of Asia.”
The other two recepients of thevaward this year are AR Rahman, an Indian composer and Yasmeen Lari, an architect and humanitarian aid from Pakistan.
Al three awardees will receive JPY3 million each (about PHP1.2 million).
The awarding will be on September 16 at the ACROS Fukuoka in Fukuoka City, Japan.
