The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has hoisted Alert Level 1 over Kanlaon Volano, located 30km from Bacolod City.

Phivolcs said a steam explosion occurred at the volcano’s summit crater at 9:55pm on Mon, Nov 23, and lasted for eight minutes based on visual observation.

The explosion produced a 1.0- to 1.5-kilometer-high white plume above the summit before drifting towards the southwest.

Audible rumbling sound was heard in Sitio Mananawin and Sitio Upper Pantao, Barangay Pula, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, Phivolcs said.

The agency said only four volcanic earthquakes had been recorded during the past week by the Kanlaon Volcano seismic network, but after the explosion, the network recorded volcanic tremor that lasted for five hours.

Steam with minor ash was seen being emitted at the summit crater on Tue morning, Nov 24.

Alert level 1 over Kanlaon means more steam and ash could be ejected and affect the crater and summit area.

If this alert level is hoisted, no one is allowed within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone.
