Alaminos shuts down milkfish industry to protect Hundred Islands

He’s not fishing for a compliment, but we’ll give him one anyway.

Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste deserves praise for making the executive decision to stop milkfish farming in his area in order to prevent contaminating the waters in the Hundred Islands National Park, the province’s prime tourist destination.

“This year, Celeste said he no longer renewed the permits of aquaculture operators in the city. He said he asked the city council to amend the ordinance regulating bangus production by encouraging operators to pursue oyster culture instead,” reports Yolanda Sotelo of Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Oysters and mussels, the mayor explains, will clean the marine ecosystem.

Around 50 fish pens, located in Mona, Tanaytay and Cayucay, will be affected.
