Airlines ban use and charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in flights

Better safe than sorry — or you can always choose another kind of smartphone.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently issued a directive banning the use and charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on flights.

“The IATA directive came on the heels of a recall by Samsung of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone after several reported instances of the unit catching fire or exploding during charging,” explained Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Over the weekend, Cebu Pacific Air issued a similar advisory on the Samsung smartphone on its flights. “Galaxy Note 7 devices must also not be stowed in checked baggage, but may be hand-carried as long as the device is turned off at all times inside the aircraft,” Cebu Pacific stated.

AirAsia has likewise banned the device on its flights. In a press release, AirAsia pointed out: “Guests may approach any AirAsia and AirAsia X ground staff for further information about this new guideline with regards to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 device.”

Now, Philippine Airlines (PAL) has also banned the use and charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on all its flights in compliance with the IATA directive.

PAL said the mobile device would not be allowed as a check-in item but may be hand-carried as long as it is turned off throughout the flight.

PAL added, though, that “all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 units, whether used or brand new, will not be accepted as PAL cargo shipment.”
