Agencies brace for overdue “200-year quake”

The Philippine Medical Association  (PMA) and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be working together to prepare for the a massive earthquake which is believed to take place every 200 years.

In a Philippine Star report,  PMA president Dr. Leo Olarte, said their organization will mobilize members and volunteers in the metropolis to assist in the  MMDA’s Oplan Metro Yakal.

The MMDA had earlier identified four possible evacuation sites and a temporary mass burial grounds  should the killer earthquake of magnitude seven or higher take place. The massive earthquake is said to have a 200-year-cycle, which is now overdue. Experts believe that the force of the quake  will divide  Metro Manila into four regions and will bring out collapse of buildings, destruction of elevated highways and bridges and damage as much as 25 percent of Metro Manila’s vital facilities such as schools, hospitals and government centers.
