A 42-year-old mother from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan has defied societal expectations and embarked on a unique educational journey. Remilyn Dimla, working as a janitor at Tuguegarao East Central School (TECS), where her Grade 1 child studies, made a bold decision to attend Kindergarten, a class typically reserved for four or five-year-olds.
It all began when Remilyn was asked to collect her child’s module from the school administration. Observing her struggle to write her full name, the school recognized an opportunity and encouraged her to enroll in Kindergarten. Remilyn courageously accepted the offer, as reported by the Cagayan Provincial Information Office in a press release.
Remilyn shared that her inability to read and write stemmed from losing interest in education when her mother prioritized her stepsister’s schooling over her own. However, with her successful completion of Kindergarten, she has now acquired the skills to write and is gradually learning to read. She expresses immense joy at having achieved the first milestone towards fulfilling her lifelong aspirations.
“I will strive to complete my education, even up to college, to secure a brighter future for myself and my child, and to make my family proud,” Remilyn vowed.
Her teacher, Glenda Ubiña, describes her as a cheerful and quick learner. Remilyn actively engages with her classmates, who affectionately refer to her as “auntie.” Recently, she had her class pictorial and is eagerly anticipating her graduation from Kindergarten, scheduled for next month.
