AFP reiterates: No coup d’état

They’re issuing a denial for the nth time, but the rumors just won’t die down.

“On Tuesday, July 29, Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala, AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs Office chief, assured that there would be no destabilization happening in the AFP after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said that retired generals are plotting such things,” reports Bong Lozada on Inquirer.net.

Zagala was quoted as saying, “Within the armed forces, presently there is no monitored destabilization among active members. There are no recruitment nor any moves within the active service.”

Then again, as the report noted, “Trillanes said in a television report that retired generals who are in support of former president and current Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are planning to overthrow the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.”

Trillanes, however, did not name the retired generals he was referring to.

Meanwhile, Zagala likewise said, “Now, if the retired officials wish to speak against the officials, or conduct rallies, that is inherent in our bill of rights. Since they are retired we have no control over them.”
