To begin with, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) budget for its 78th anniversary celebration on December 21 is quite considerable. They had PHP7 million set aside for the red-letter day.
“Instead, the AFP has chosen to donate the money to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda,” reports Jaime Sinapit on InterAksyon.com.
The report quoted AFP spokesman Major General Domingo Tutaan, who explained, “The leadership of the AFP [had decided] to forgo other festivities in order that we may be able to save money and the amount would be dedicated to the continuing HADR (Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Response) activities.”
That means, as the report put it, “there will be no more parade of troops and fly-by of planes, or airborne show of paratroopers on the anniversary date.”
We still can’t get over the PHP7 million “party fund.” It’s great that it’s going to Yolanda victims this time around.
