Actress Bianca Umali’s ‘no filter’ and ‘no makeup’ post gets flak online

By now we should already know how to embrace all forms of beauty (au naturel or not), but social media has a magical way of making us argue about anything, including what we put on our faces.

Teenage actress Bianca Umali posted a seemingly innocent photo highlighting the importance of loving one’s bare face… and those who know the power of a Ruby Woo lipstick are not getting any of it.

“I have observed how a lot of females cannot leave their homes without putting anything on their faces. Well, yes, we all know what makeup can do. And yes, makeup is AMAZING. But what I’m sad about is that most of the girls I have observed are more confident about themselves WITH makeup on than having LESS or NONE,” she wrote on Facebook and Instagram.

So what’s wrong with the post?

It’s 2017 and lipstick-loving ladies are saying that they should not be judged for their choices. Makeup, after all, is an acceptable way of self-expression, and a tool for empowerment. Plus it takes time and effort to master the tricky art of contouring.

“Empowerment for women means making the choices that make us truly happy. And if for some of us, it’s putting on makeup, then so be it! Also, it doesn’t mean that we don’t appreciate the face we were born with. It’s not like we are changing identities every time we put on lipstick,” said a netizen.

“Don’t ever feel ashamed in using makeup if you ever feel the need to cover a pimple, a line or a scar. Don’t ever feel that you owe anyone an explanation for wanting to look presentable or owning 50 kinds of lipsticks,” said a popular makeup blogger.

Naysayers also pointed out that Umali can only manage to appear beautiful even without makeup because she has the money to spend on long-term grooming procedures. She is an endorser of the well-known “Doctor to the Stars”, Dr. Manny Calayan.

We’re pretty sure that Bianca’s post had good intentions, but it’s a reminder that it’s never a good idea to mess with women and their makeup kits.

Bianca’s post on Facebook has earned more than 84,000 likes and 17,000 shares.
