Actor Philip Salvador lambasted for wishing death upon Duterte critics during SONA

Filipino action star Philip Salvador, a vocal supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte, has earned the ire of netizens after wishing death upon the chief executives’ numerous critics.

Salvador made his emotional tirade in front of several reporters at the Batasang Pambansa (Philippine Congress) in Quezon City yesterday, shortly before Duterte’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Salvador arrived at the event accompanied by fellow actor and Duterte supporter Robin Padilla, who stood beside him while they talked to journalists.

“The president is doing everything he can to make the country better, to improve the lives of Filipinos. But he is still being criticized. To everyone who is attacking him, I wish you would die. Thank you.” he said, almost shouting.

Salvador has been inactive in the entertainment business for several years but in the late 1970s and 1980s, he became known for starring in films that shed light on social injustices such as Orapronobis, Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim (This Is My Country),  and Jaguar. The films were directed by his mentor the late Lino Brocka, one of the most influential Filipino directors of all time who was charged for inciting to sedition for protesting against former President Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship.

Many netizens pointed out that Salvador’s rant goes very much against what Brocka stood for, such as @hecklerforever8 who wrote: “Lino Brocka just rolled over in his grave.”

Others attacked Salvador by calling him irrelevant, such as @Sfvalley22, who wrote: “Philip Salvador is a POS (piece of sh*t) wannabe celebrity. Your fame is over so just SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH DUMB AS*!”

“Philip Salvador and Robin Padilla are the best examples of how many of the pro admin people behave and talk,” wrote @CarmelaMrsgn.

Padilla has been routinely criticized for his support of the Duterte administration, specifically after saying that those who were angered by the West Philippine Sea boat sinking incident should just go to the disputed area and fight the Chinese themselves.

“If there’s anything more annoying than what he just said, it’s the way he said it. Soo UGLY Philip Salvador,” wrote @cherrycabal.

@Don8don3 mocked the actor by asking media companies ABS-CBN, GMA, and TV5 to “revive Philip Salvador’s career.”

@JustJohn2019, a Duterte supporter, didn’t like what Salvador said either. “You really want all of them to die? That’s how harsh your statement was.”

Twitter user @embracethspace tried to make light of what Salvador said. “Good morning except to philip salvador. [W]hy are washed up actors all over the SONA?”
