A barangay (village) captain of an island in the province of Negros Occidental has earned praise online for providing free boat rides for students so they can attend school and finish their studies.
Captain Rocky Pasaylo of barangay Molocaboc made the announcement on his Facebook page today, where he wrote:
“All students of [barangay] Molocaboc are informed that starting January 2023, your fare is free Vito-Molocaboc and vice versa. I will be able to help you until you graduate.”
The captain reminded students to show their latest school ID to enjoy the free rides.
Molocaboc, an island under the city of Sagay, is a 15-minute boat ride away from its neighboring municipality of Vito on the mainland.
Two boats will ferry the students to and from Vito and Molocaboc.
Locals praised the captain for taking the initiative to help students finish their studies, whose isolation from the mainland can hinder them from doing so.
“You’re the only one who managed to make this happen for our island, thank you,” one wrote.
“God bless you always, captain, because you have a good heart for us,” another said.
