9-year-old Tondo boy is this season’s first firecracker victim

Despite repeated warnings on the dangers of firecrackers, Metro Manila “met” its first firecracker victim on Saturday, Dec 21.

“A nine-year-old boy in Tondo, Manila injured his right thumb and index finger after playing with some piccolo, becoming the first case of fireworks-related injury this year,” reports Mayen Jaymalin in The Philippine Star.

According to the report, the kid was taken to the Tondo Medical Center for treatment and subsequently discharged. Despite the incident, it seems that the Department of Health (DOH) is optimistic, saying that “there has been no death or case of firecracker ingestion and stray-bullet injury reported so far.”

Well, we just realized that “so far” is one scary phrase.
