Eight people riding a passenger van have died after the vehicle collided with a 6-wheeler truck in Babatngon, Leyte province this morning.

The victims were eight of 18 passengers riding the van on the way to the province’s capital, Tacloban City, the police told ABS-CBN News. They reportedly died on the spot, while the remaining 10 passengers were rushed to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban for treatment.

The 6-wheeler, on the other hand, was carrying pigs meant to be delivered to the Babatngon Public Market, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

The incident happened at around 6:14am in the town’s Sitio Tab-ang, Police Lieutenant Melvin Ayay told Inquirer. She said that the van left it’s terminal in Babatngon at around 5am and that the site of the incident is an accident-prone area.

Witnesses told GMA News that the truck was moving fast, moved to the opposite lane, and hit the van’s left side.

The victims’ names have not been reported.
