Only 7 of 10 Filipinos trust online news media: Survey

When it comes to the content Filipinos read online, at least seven out of 10 Filipinos say they trust social media over content on news websites.

This is according to the annual Philippine Trust Index (PTI) survey, published yesterday.

The survey was conducted by communications firm EON.

At least nine out of 10 Filipinos said that they trusted content they read directly on social media.

According to a report on Inquirer.net, 1,200 Filipinos were included in the nationwide survey.

“…while Filipinos generally perceive the media to be skilled in the work they do, Filipinos, most especially the informed public, find the integrity of the media lacking,” EON Chief Innovation Officer Mori Rodriguez said during the PTI’s launch at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater yesterday.

“This does not go well for media. And the decline in the extreme trust in this institution underscores the importance of improving the media’s reputation both from within and without,” he added.

Duterte has picked fights with traditional media before including the Philippine Daily Inquirer, who he has publicly threatened to sue and Rappler, an online news site he accused of being owned by Americans during his last State of the Nation Address.

Duterte’s social media supporters, who have millions of followers on Facebook, have also become information sources themselves, although they have been caught sharing content from fake news sites on several occasions.
