6 viral videos we got hooked on in 2015

1. Pabebe Warriors

Out of nowhere in July, they caught everybody’s attention with their galit na galit and palaban video. “Walang makakapigil sa amin,” was their battlecry. “Kung gusto niyo, gumawa kayo ng sarili ninyong bidyo.”  What were they so mad about? And really, what the hell is pabebe? The Pabebe Warriors video quickly went viral — as did this video of the two gay men who parodied it.

2. That PLDT rant guy

Because everybody could relate and identify with alias Owhen Ranger, his rant video about PLDT’s poor internet connection and even worse customer service went viral in November. “Hanggang press 10 umabot na ko, tapos yung tugtog nakakarindi,” he began, repeatedly saying “galit na galit na talaga ako sa inyo ha.” The video is only two minutes long but it expressed very beautifully all the rage everybody is feeling over the terrible, terrible internet speed.

3. Maria Sofia Love

At one point in 2015, “para sa ekonomiya”, “ituloy ang modeling” and “pak!” were the expressions du jour of Filipinos. That’s all thanks to Maria Sofia Love, the London-based cross-dressing model who likes to take a video of herself while strutting her stuff on the streets of the Great Smog. Her self-directed videos were watched, re-watched, and shared enough times that (1) they went viral and (2) her expressions became our expressions. Pak na pak talaga!

4. Rommel and Badgi

When Coconuts TV released the video of Rommel and his dog Badgi, it put a human face to the many streetchildren Manileños dotting the streets of metro. The 11-year-old Rommel told us about how Badgi protects him from the dangers of living on the streets, about his struggles even with law enforcers, and his hopes and dreams. The video quickly turned viral and proved there was still some goodness in this world; people wanted to know where to find Rommel and how to help him.

5. Balang on Ellen

Seven-year-old YouTube sensation Balang charmed the socks of Ellen de Generes when he appeared on her show in May. He danced “Bang Bang” and revealed that he wanted to be a Zumba instructor when he grows old. It didn’t take him long. By the time Balang made another Ellen appearance in November, he was already one. Of course, no guesting is complete without Balang busting a move, so he danced to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”.

6. Maine Mendoza’s Kris Aquino Dubsmash

And of course, the one that started the single best thing to have come out of the year: Maine Mendoza’s Kris Aquino Dubsmash video. Mendoza was a little known netizen, who jumped on the Dubsmash bandwagon by impersonating Kris Aquino and her beloved PA Darla. She almost broke the Internet in April when, within 24 short hours, her video was viewed over 1 million times. When Coconuts Manila caught up with her five days later, Maine was on the brink of breaking the 2 million mark with her video. In June, Maine auditioned for Eat Bulaga! In July, we all know what’s happened then.
