A 5-year-old boy died yesterday when a fire engulfed his house in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, as his father worked at the family’s roadside kiosk on a nearby street.
Mon-Harry Anhao was sleeping on the second floor of his home in the village of Agus when the fire broke out. His father, Feddy Anhao, had left the boy alone because he had to go to work.
“The child was alone in the house because his father was manning their store at the side of the street,” Fire Officer 1 Mildred Villaban told newspaper The Freeman. “The house is located in the interior portion [of the village].”
When the fire broke out at 9am, Feddy rushed back in a desperate bid to save his son, but the boy remained trapped inside the building, reported Cebu Digital News. He and his neighbors said they could hear Mon-Harry screaming “Papa!” before he passed away.
Feddy, who sustained unspecified injuries while attempting to break through the home’s jalousie (or louvre) windows, is separated from the boy’s mother.
The fire was extinguished at about 10am. Firemen are investigating the cause of the fire, but they believe that it was caused by faulty electrical wiring, reported Balitambayan.
