Who was it who said that the Philippines was a safe place?

Four teenagers were arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing the cellphone of Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III in Manila.

The teens, aged 15 to 18, were arrested in the Quiapo district. The youths allegedly sold the phone for PHP30,000 (US$623) with the help of a woman who said that she wasn’t aware that the phone was stolen, Unang Balita reported. The woman will stand witness against the youths.

However, the police have arrested a certain Omar Sidic, the man who bought the phone from the teens and sold it for PHP34,000 (US$706.13).

One of the suspects said he was directed by a certain JD to steal Bello’s phone, while another said they were paid PHP5,000 (US$104) to do the job. JD was able to evade arrest.

Bello was inside his car that was stuck in traffic along P. Burgos Street when the suspects allegedly snatched his iPhone. The labor secretary opened the window of his vehicle because he was trying to get a clearer signal when one of the suspects took his cellphone and ran away.
