The Philippines continues to be rocked by quakes as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) announced today that a 4.2-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Sarangani town, Davao Occidental this morning.

The earthquake struck the area at 9:34am according to the PHILVOCS. The agency said they are not expecting any damages or aftershocks from the incident. Last night, another quake hit the same area, which had a magnitude of 3.7, reported The Philippine Daily Inquirer. The PHILVOCS said it occurred at 7:09pm.

Prior to that earthquake, another quake struck Sarangani yesterday at 11:28am with a magnitude of 4.5, according to the PHILVOCS. It was also yesterday when a quake hit Baganga, Davao Oriental with a magnitude of 4.7 at 11:43am. Meanwhile, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit the Visayas region on Tuesday.

PHIVOLCS research specialist Henry Peñarubia told ABS-CBN News that despite the string of quakes occurring in the Davao region, there was nothing irregular going on.

In an effort to allay the public’s fears, Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum told radio station DZMM that on average, 20 earthquakes occur in the Philippines daily, some of which are so weak that they cannot be felt.

The series of earthquakes started on Monday when a 6.1 magnitude quake hit the island of Luzon, killing 17 people, most of whom lived in Pampanga province, SunStar Pampanga reported.

The Philippines lies within the Ring of Fire, an area characterized by active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
