“In a press briefing at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) on Thursday afternoon, January 29, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director
Franklin Bucayu said the three inmates who are members of the members of the Sputnik Gang were behind the explosion that
occurred inside the maximum security compound last January 8,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.
Bucayu, though, refused to name the inmates. The Jan 8 grenade blast had left one inmate dead and 19 others injured.
The report noted: “Bucayu said murder charges against the three Sputnik Gang inmates will be filed before the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court against the suspects, who have already been put in disciplinary cells and isolated from the other inmates.”
Bucayu added that “one of the motives for the grenade attack they are looking into is the inmates’ opposition to the BuCor’s reforms in the state penitentiary.” There’s also “gang rivalry,” he said.
Following the identification of the suspects in the explosion, the visitation privileges of the inmates at the NBP maximum security compound have been “partially restored.”
The report indicated that this means “the inmates’ mmediate family members will be allowed to visit from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.” Meanwhile, lawyers are allowed to see their clients anytime everyday.
