They were old enough to know better.

“The Manila Police District (MPD) on Monday, January 19, filed before the prosecutors’ office in Manila a criminal case against the three people who cracked a bomb joke during Pope Francis’ visit to Manila,” reports Tetch Torres-Tupas on Inquirer.net.

The three have been identified as Ellyn Ventura, 26; Erlinda Sison, 27; and Albert Corpuz, 21.

The three are being charged for the violation of Presidential Decree 1727, which “declares as unlawful the malicious dissemination of false information of the willful making of any threat concerning bombs, explosives, and such.”

The report revealed that Ventura, Sison, and Corpuz “were arrested on Sunday, January 18, around 12:30 p.m. after witnesses heard the them joking about carrying a bomb and guns.”

At first, the three were told by the police that they could have caused alarm and trigger a stampede. However, the three only laughed. Thus, the police arrested them.

On Mon, Jan 19, the three were taken to the prosecutors’ office to undergo inquest proceedings.

The report explained: “An inquest is an informal and summary investigation conducted by the public prosecutor in a criminal case involving a person arrested and detained without the benefit of a warrant of arrest for determining whether the person should remain under custody and be charged in court.”

If the three are convicted, they face “imprisonment of not more than five years or a fine of PHP40,000 or both depending upon the discretion of the court that will handle the case.”
