At least three Filipinos were hurt in Barcelona, Spain, where a van rammed into a crowd yesterday, according to ABS-CBN News.
ABS-CBN confirmed that a Filipino couple based in Ireland were in Barcelona on vacation. The three were hospitalized, but are out of danger.
They did not want to be identified so that relatives in the Philippines would not be alarmed.
Drivers plowed into pedestrians in two separate quick-succession attacks in Barcelona and Cambrilis, a popular Spanish seaside city, leaving 13 people dead and injuring more than 100 others.
In the first incident, which was claimed by the Islamic State group, a white van sped into a street packed full of tourists in central Barcelona yesterday afternoon, knocking people out of the way and killing 13 in a scene of chaos and horror.
Las Ramblas, the site of the deadly terror attack, is a key boulevard in Barcelona. It is a promenade that is popular with tourists and where the city traditionally celebrates the Barca football club’s victories.
The mother was unhurt while the father is under observation at the hospital. The daughter was discharged from the hospital while doctors assessed if the son would need surgery.
Another Filipino who survived the attack, Naizarein Reyes Nidoy, brought the family to the hospital.
“I was about to run, but I saw a Filipino family was hurt. I ran to them. I carried the daughter first. I helped them. I did not leave them until we got the hospital,” Naizarein recounted.
Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has declared three days of national mourning as police investigate the attack.
