Three policemen and a village official were wounded during an ambush this morning in Socorro town in Oriental Mindoro.

Chief Master Sergeant Ivan Fortus, Senior Master Sergeant Irene Lazo, Corporal Ivy Carmona, and Palayan village chief Nolito dela Cruz were aboard a patrol vehicle and traveling through the village of Pasi II when a group of unidentified gunmen ambushed them at 7:45am, according to The Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Also in the patrol car were Pinamalayan Police Station Chief Ruelito Magtibay and the group’s driver, Patrolman Raquel Generoso, neither of whom were hit.

The group escaped the ambush site when Generoso quickly sped away from the area. The victims were rushed to the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital in Calapan City, reported radio station DZMM.

The group was on its way to a radio station in Calapan City when they were attacked, reported SunStar Manila. While the assailants have yet to be identified, police alleged that they recovered sacks that were painted with the words “Stop NPA (New People’s Army) ambush on-going” from the crime scene.

An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the crime.
