2 US senators defend Philippines following Trump’s terrorism allegation

Two senators in the United States have responded to Donald Trump calling the Philippine a terrorist nation.

On Thu, Aug 4, the Republican presidential hopeful launched new attacks and said immigrants from countries like the Philippines should be barred entry to the United States.

“We are letting people come in from terrorist nations that shouldn’t be allowed because you can’t vet them,” he said.

He also mentioned Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Uzbekisan and Yemen.

“Donald Trump’s latest rant suggesting we ban immigration from countries like the Philippines that are helping us fight terrorism is another example of his reckless rhetoric that’s based on fear and division and further proves he is unfit to lead our country,” said U.S. Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii in a statement published on his website.

“For generations, Filipinos have made the United States their home.  It is their vibrant culture, hard work, and strong values that have enriched our communities and made this country great, not the ignorant, racist bigotry of Donald Trump,” he added.

Nerissa Bretania Underwoodm, a Senator in the Guam Legislature originally from Iloilo, also condemned Trump’s proposal.  “Filipinos on our island and across the country serve in uniform, in our hospitals, in our schools and across every private and public sector — Filipinos are also beloved members of our families and communities.”

She described Trump’s proposal as divisive and reckless. With an AFP report
