2 students from Manila drown in Batangas

Nobody saw it coming.

“Hosea Jizo Pinto, a Business Management student of De La Salle University (DLSU), and Therese Maria Cordero, a Development Studies student of University of the Philippines-Manila (UP-Manila) drowned in a private beach resort in Calatagan, Batangas on Thursday afternoon, June 12,” reports ABS-CBN News Southern Tagalog correspondent Arnell Ozaeta on ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report said Cordero’s 45-year-old father, Ronald, also died while trying to save his daughter.

The two sophomore students had been among the people chatting along the breakwater when strong waves swept them away at around 1:30pm.

According to the report, “more than 10 people were carried away by the big waves but some of them managed to swim back to the breakwater.”

The Corderos were reportedly “found by fishermen and rushed to Calatagan Medicare Hospital.” But they were declared dead on arrival at the emergency room.

Pinto was missing for almost 17 hours before his body was found a few meters away from the shore of the same barangay. His body was cremated and brought back to Manila on Friday, June 13.
