Two Filipino mountaineers were declared safe after being caught in a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal while at a base camp in Mount Everest.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed this update, according to reports received from the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi, India.

The DFA will be sending a team to Nepal to give aid to the two Filipinos, who were identified as Jessica Anne Nicole Ramirez and Jose Francisco Oracion.

It was reported that the mountaineers went to the base camp of Mount Everest for a vacation, and were staying at Khwopa Guest House in Bhaktapur, Kathmandu when the earthquake took place.

Both Ramirez and Oracion are currently in Durbar Square with other survivors of the earthquake that brought about an avalanche of the mountain.

The DFA said the two may possibly be either brought to the consulate in New Delhi or be given return tickets to the Philippines.

Chargé d’Affaires Maria Agnes M. Cervantes also affirmed that no Filipinos were reported to have died from the earthquake in Nepal.

“Sa awa ng Diyos, as of yesterday, about after 5:19 p.m., ang report ng ating Philippine Honorary Consulate doon walang nasaktan na mga Pilipino,” Cervantes said.

The Crisis Management Team will be heading to Kathmandu Sunday night to assert the situation of all Filipinos living in the area.

It is estimated that about 300 Filipinos are in Nepal, where majority are residing in Kathmandu. —from a report by dzmm.com.ph
