2 new bike lanes open in QC, MMDA pushes bike-sharing scheme

The green way is the right way…now if only we can make other Metro Manila drivers respect bicycle riders more.

“On Wednesday, Mar 26, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will launch its ‘Bike-kadahan’ scheme in time for the opening of the bicycle lane on EDSA in Quezon City,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

Two new bicycle lanes that will be opened in Quezon City this week:

1. a 2.105-kilometer stretch from Ortigas to Santolan (northbound) along EDSA

2. a 982.6-meter stretch along White Plains from EDSA to Temple Drive (eastbound)

The new lanes are painted in red markings and have been installed with traffic directional signs and safety devices.

Under the “Bike-kadahan,” interested riders may use bicycles provided by the MMDA for free.

Here’s how it goes: “Those who want to ride bikes just have to present a valid identification card in exchange for a card indicating the bike number. This card should be surrendered at the exit area where the bike will be returned.”

Then, small trailer trucks will be utilized to serve as mobile bicycle shelters on designated bicycle lanes in various parts of Metro Manila. The trailer trucks can accommodate up to 50 bicycles.
