Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno on Tuesday made the rounds of milk tea shops in the city in the wake of last week’s deaths of two people after consuming milk tea in Sampaloc. Moreno was accompanied by city health and building officials as he visited tea shops near the University Belt.

Two milk tea shops were closed for lack of sanitary and business permits.

Moreno, meanwhile, ordered milk tea from some shops to assure the public that the incident last week was an isolated case.

Several milk tea establishments have been affected following the deaths of Ergo Cha Milk Tea House owner William Abrigo and his customer Suzaine Dagohoy. Dagohoy’s boyfriend, Arnold Aydalla, was hospitalized.

Initial tests conducted by the Department of Health (DOH) showed that there was no toxic substance in the sample of the milk tea consumed by the victims.

The initial tests sought to find if the milk tea sample was tainted with cyanide, nitrite, nitrate, or arsenic.

The DOH said the same milk tea sample will be subjected to another round of tests to determine what specific substance caused the milk tea poisoning. This time, toxicologists will determine if the milk tea was tainted with any of the following substances: Oxalic acid, Nitrobenzene, Organophosphate, and Organochlorine. —reports from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM; ANC
