2 meteor showers will light up the Philippines’ night sky in December

Looks like the Philippines will have more than just a twinkling Christmas season after its weather bureau confirmed Filipinos may witness two meteor showers across the night sky this month.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Filipinos could view the Geminid and Ursid meteor showers gracing the skies in December.

The Geminid meteor shower will be active from Dec. 4 to 17 and will peak on Dec. 14, while the Ursid meteor shower will be active from Dec. 17 to 26 and will peak on Dec. 22.

For those wondering if one needs special equipment to view these phenomena, you’re in luck: PAGASA said the meteor shower is visible to the naked eye.

“Meteor showers are observable through the naked eye, and no special equipment such as telescopes or binoculars is needed… Maximize the viewing experience by choosing a dark observation site away from the city lights under clear and moonless sky conditions,” PAGASA advised.
